Graduate tech jobs in the UK: the 2026 picture

If you are a computer science graduate in the UK this year, or an international student from Pakistan or India finishing a master's in Manchester, Leeds or London, you have probably noticed that graduate tech jobs are much harder to find than the brochures promised. You are not imagining it, and it is not only you.

I am a Lead Full Stack Engineer in Lahore, and a growing share of the people I mentor are UK graduates: some British, many on Student or Graduate visas, all asking versions of the same thing. "Where have the graduate software engineer jobs gone, and what should I do with the time I have on my visa?" This post answers both, with the latest UK data and the visa rules that shape your options.

What the UK data says about graduate tech jobs

Three sources give a fairly consistent picture.

Overall hiring is weak, and new entrants feel it most. Indeed Hiring Lab's UK snapshot for August 2026 found job postings still 31% below early-2020 levels, with software development among the categories still far below their pre-pandemic baseline. It also said prospective new entrants to the labour market are "bearing the brunt" of weak hiring demand (Indeed Hiring Lab, 25 August 2026).

Advertised graduate vacancies fell sharply. Adzuna data released on 24 August 2026 showed a 45% year-on-year fall in advertised graduate job vacancies. The Institute of Student Employers, which surveys large graduate employers directly, cautioned that online adverts are not the same as total graduate jobs, since many employers recruit through campus, LinkedIn and their own pipelines. ISE's own previous survey had graduate vacancies down 8%, and its next Student Recruitment Survey is due on 14 October 2026 (ISE response, 25 August 2026).

AI is reshaping what is being hired. The same Indeed snapshot found 9.4% of all UK job postings now mention AI, and AI job titles have almost tripled in the UK since 2022.

Put simply: fewer junior roles are advertised, more of the hiring happens through channels you have to be inside to see, and the roles that are growing want people who can work with AI rather than be replaced by it.

Why UK graduate software engineer jobs dried up

The causes are similar to what I described for the US in is computer science still worth it, with a few British twists.

  • Companies hired heavily in 2021 and 2022, then cut back, and graduate schemes were among the first budgets trimmed.
  • AI tools absorbed some classic junior tasks, so teams hire fewer people to do the work that used to train graduates.
  • Applications went up while vacancies went down. AI-written applications make every advert noisier, which pushes employers towards referrals and pipelines they control.
  • Employer costs rose, which makes long, expensive graduate training schemes harder to justify.

None of this means the UK has stopped hiring engineers. It means the front door (big graduate schemes and job boards) got narrower, while the side doors (internships, referrals, smaller companies, contract roles) matter much more.

The visa clock for international graduates

If you are on a Student visa, your timeline is shaped by two routes. These are the official rules as published on GOV.UK in 2026.

RouteKey ruleWhat it means for you
Graduate visa2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026; 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027 (3 years for PhDs). £937 fee plus the health surcharge, usually £1,035 a yearIf you finish soon, applying before the end of 2026 gives you six more months
Skilled Worker visaSalary must be at least £41,700 or the going rate for the job, whichever is higherMany graduate developer salaries fall below this outside London
Skilled Worker new entrant rateAt least £33,400 and 70% of the going rate if you are under 26, or switching from a Student or Graduate visa, among other casesThis is the route most graduates use, but your total stay on it, including Graduate visa time, cannot exceed 4 years

The most important practical point: the Graduate visa is not a waiting room, it is your runway. Every month you spend on it should be moving you towards a sponsored role or towards experience that makes you sponsorable. The new entrant rate also has a four-year cap that includes Graduate visa time, so plan your moves with that clock in mind.

I am not an immigration adviser; check your exact case with GOV.UK or a regulated adviser.

Where UK graduates are actually getting tech jobs in 2026

From the graduates I have mentored this year, these channels worked far better than mass-applying on job boards.

  1. Internships and placement years that convert. If you are still studying, a summer internship or a year in industry is the single strongest route. My answer on when do summer internships open explains why you need to apply in the autumn before.
  2. Smaller companies and scale-ups. They rarely run formal graduate schemes, so they do not show up as "graduate vacancies", but they hire juniors who can ship. Check whether they hold a sponsor licence before you invest time, using the government's register of licensed sponsors and my answer on how to find companies that sponsor visas.
  3. Referrals. A referral from someone inside moves your CV from a pile of hundreds to a short list. My answer on how to cold message recruiters and ask for referrals on LinkedIn shows how to ask without being awkward.
  4. Adjacent roles. QA automation, data analyst, technical support engineer, solutions engineer and DevOps support roles are often more open to graduates and can lead into development. The tech roles beyond coding roadmap and QA and test automation roadmap cover these.
  5. Public sector and regulated industries. Banks, insurers, the NHS and government digital teams hire engineers too, though some public sector roles have nationality or security clearance rules. Check each listing.
  6. Remote work for companies outside the UK while on the Graduate visa, if the contract allows it, to build experience. The remote jobs roadmap explains how to find genuine remote roles.

What makes a UK graduate CV get past the filter

The UK market rewards evidence. These are the changes I most often suggest to graduates.

  • Lead with what you built, not modules you took. Two deployed projects with a sentence on the problem, the stack and one result beat a list of coursework.
  • Show you can work with AI tools sensibly. With 9.4% of UK postings mentioning AI, a project where you used an LLM API properly (with evaluation and cost limits) is a strong signal. The AI engineering roadmap and LLM APIs cheat sheet help here.
  • Be specific about your right to work. Say clearly if you are on a Graduate visa and until when. Recruiters prefer knowing upfront to discovering it at offer stage.
  • Keep it to two pages at most, in a clean format without photos, as UK employers expect.
  • Tailor the top third to each role. My post on why your resume is not getting shortlisted goes through this line by line.

When you start getting interviews, UK tech interviews usually include a coding exercise, a technical discussion of your projects and a competency or values interview. For the coding rounds, Grokking the Coding Interview: Patterns for Coding Questions is a solid structured course; for competency questions, Grokking Modern Behavioral Interview helps you build clear stories.

A 6-month plan for the Graduate visa runway

MonthFocus
1Pick one target role (for example backend, data or QA automation). Rewrite your CV and LinkedIn for it. List 60 companies, at least half of them licensed sponsors
2Ship or polish two portfolio projects for that role. Start five conversations a week with engineers at your target companies
3Apply in weekly batches, tracking every application. Ask for referrals where you have a real connection
4Take a stepping-stone role if one comes up: contract, support, QA or a smaller company. Experience on your CV changes your next search completely
5Review the numbers honestly: replies, interviews, offers. Change the target, the CV or the channel, not just the volume
6Prepare a fallback: a remote role, a move to another country or returning home with UK experience. Graduate visa time counts towards the four-year new entrant limit, so use it deliberately

For the mechanics of running a search like this, my post a job search is a pipeline, not a performance and the job search roadmap go into detail.

If the UK does not work out

It is fine to look elsewhere, and it is not a failure. Some of the UK graduates I have mentored moved to Germany through the EU Blue Card, some returned home and joined companies that valued their UK degree, and some kept working remotely for UK clients from Pakistan. My answer on work abroad or work remotely from home helps you compare these honestly.

My honest read

The UK graduate tech market in 2026 is the toughest I have seen. Advertised graduate vacancies have fallen hard, and international graduates face a shrinking visa runway from 2027. But companies are still hiring engineers, especially those who can show real projects, use AI sensibly and come recommended by someone. Stop treating job boards as the main channel, treat your Graduate visa as a deliberate plan, and take the stepping-stone role if it moves you forward.

FAQ

Why are graduate tech jobs in the UK so hard to find in 2026?

Hiring overall is still well below pre-pandemic levels, advertised graduate vacancies fell sharply in 2026 according to Adzuna data, and AI tools have absorbed some junior tasks. More hiring now happens through internships, referrals and smaller companies.

How long is the UK Graduate visa from 2027?

18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, and 2 years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026. PhD graduates get 3 years.

What salary do I need for a Skilled Worker visa as a graduate?

The general minimum is £41,700 or the going rate. New entrants, including people under 26 and those switching from a Student or Graduate visa, can qualify at £33,400 and 70% of the going rate, with a total stay limit of four years.

Should I take a non-developer tech role after graduating in the UK?

If it gives you real technical experience and is sponsorable, often yes. QA automation, data and support engineering roles regularly lead into development.

Are graduate software engineer jobs in the UK still worth applying for?

Yes, but apply early in the autumn cycle, use referrals and target smaller companies as well as large graduate schemes. Mass-applying on job boards is the least effective approach this year.
